The biennial IBP was established by ICAS in 2003. The IBP is awarded to outstanding publications in the field of Asian Studies. It has created an international focus for publications on Asia, which has increased their visibility and recognition worldwide. The IBP has grown from an experiment with 50 books and 5 dissertations in 2005, to the leading Book Prize in the field of Asian Studies, with 600 books and 150 dissertations submitted for the 2019 edition.

The IBP 2021 English edition is organised by ICAS, and sponsored by The Asian Library at Leiden University

Language Editions

To reflect ICAS’ decentring approach, the IBP honours publications in Chinese (simplified / traditional), English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. For the English and French language editions we also welcome dissertations on Asia in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

IBP 2021 Global Hong Kong Studies

Organised and sponsored by the Society for Hong Kong Studies (SHKS), the newest addition to the ICAS Book Prize family is the IBP for Best Article on Global Hong Kong Studies. Find all information here. Submissions are no longer possible (deadline was 1 February 2021).

Asian Studies Exhibitor Gallery at the virtual ICAS 12

The online IBP awards ceremony will be held on 24 August 2021. ICAS 12 will take place over a period of five days from Tuesday 24–Saturday 28 August 2021. Join our online conference platform which will be fully customised and transformed to give ICAS 12 a Kyoto-themed look and feel.

Publishers and academic institutes are invited to exhibit at the online Asian Studies Exhibitor Gallery at ICAS 12 to showcase their publications and make sales, but most importantly scout for new manuscripts. With approximately 1,500 Asia Scholars coming together every two years, in different locations across the world each time, and this time online, the convention presents publishers and academic institutes with an incredible audience- and offers acquisition editors a very deep pool of potential new authors. ICAS 12 will also host events such as dissertation pitches, meet the author sessions and book presentations. For more information, please visit:

ICAS 12 Books and Dissertations Presentation Carousel

Closely connected to the IBP is the ICAS Books and Dissertations Presentation Carousel, in which authors are given the floor to present and discuss their work. We also strongly encourage authors of non-English titles to present (in English) their publications at the ICAS 12 Books and Dissertations Presentation Carousel.
Submit your proposal to ICAS 12 though the online submission system [Submissions are now closed].
